What clay, polish and sealant actually do in an exterior detail
Short answer
Clay pulls out bonded contamination that washing leaves behind. A single-stage polish evens out light defects, aiming for about 80% of perfect. A sealant then protects that finish for months. The polish is what separates an Exterior Detail from a Decontamination Wash.

Quick facts
| Clay | Removes bonded contamination |
|---|---|
| Single-stage polish | Improves gloss and light defects, about 80% of perfect |
| Sealant | Protects the finish for months |
| Exterior Detail at APC | About 4 hours |
What does clay do?
Even after a good wash, paint can feel rough, like fine sandpaper. That's bonded contamination: iron from brake dust, industrial fallout and grit stuck in the clear coat. A clay bar or clay towel glides across lubricated paint and pulls that out. When the paint needs it, an iron remover is used first to dissolve iron particles. Sometimes clay alone is enough.
What does a single-stage polish do?
Polish is a very fine abrasive, applied by machine, that smooths the very top of the clear coat. It removes light swirls and haze and brings back gloss. A single-stage polish is one pass with one product, and it aims for about 80% of perfect. That's a big visual improvement in a reasonable amount of time. Getting closer to 100% is paint correction, which is a different service.
What does the sealant do?
A sealant is a protective layer on top of the freshly polished paint. It adds slickness and water beading, helps dirt and road film release when washing, and lasts for months. It's like putting a screen protector on a phone after cleaning the glass.
So how is that different from a Decontamination Wash?
A Decontamination Wash is a wash plus clay, iron remover when needed, and a sealant. An Exterior Detail is all of that plus the single-stage polish. If your paint looks good but feels rough, the decon wash is enough. If it looks dull or lightly swirled, the polish is what makes the difference.
At APC Auto Spa
APC's Exterior Detail takes about 4 hours: a wash, clay decontamination, a single-stage polish and a sealant. The complimentary vacuum of the cabin and wipe-down of the driver's area come with every APC service. The Decontamination Wash takes about 2.5 hours and skips the polish.

Frequently asked questions
- Will a single-stage polish remove all swirls?
- No. It aims for about 80% of perfect. Removing nearly all swirls and deeper defects is paint correction, which is quoted on site and billed by the hour.
- Does clay scratch paint?
- Used with plenty of lubrication by a trained technician, clay glides over the paint and does not damage it.
- How long does a sealant last?
- A sealant protects the finish for months. Regular gentle washing helps it last.
