Swirl marks: where they come from and how paint correction removes them

Short answer

Swirls are fine scratches from brush washes, dirty towels and dry wiping. Paint correction machine-polishes away a thin layer of clear coat to level them out. APC quotes correction on site and bills it by the hour.

What are swirl marks?

Swirls are thousands of tiny scratches in the clear coat. Each one is too small to see alone, but together they catch light and form circles or a spiderweb pattern around bright lights. They show most on dark paint, in the sun or under parking garage lighting.

Where do they come from?

Almost always from washing and drying. Brush and friction washes, dirty wash mitts, old towels, dry wiping dust off with a cloth, and the scouring side of a kitchen sponge all leave them. See hand wash vs tunnel car wash.

How does paint correction remove them?

Clear coat is a thin, clear layer over the color. Paint correction uses a machine polisher and abrasive polishes to remove a tiny amount of it, leveling the surface down to the bottom of the scratches. It's like sanding a scuffed wooden table smooth before refinishing it. Several steps with finer and finer polishes bring back clarity and gloss.

Because clear coat is limited, correction is done carefully, and some deep scratches can't be safely removed. A scratch you can catch with a fingernail is usually too deep.

Do I need correction or just a polish?

The single-stage polish in an Exterior Detail aims for about 80% of perfect and is plenty for many cars. Paint correction is for when you want to get as close to perfect as the paint allows, or before a ceramic coating. See what clay, polish and sealant do.

At APC Auto Spa

APC quotes paint correction on site after looking at the paint, and bills it by the hour, because every car's paint and condition is different. Both shops offer it.

After correction, protecting the paint with a sealant or ceramic coating helps it stay that way. Book an assessment through APC's scheduling page.

Frequently asked questions

Can swirl marks come back after correction?
Yes, if the car goes back to brush washes or dry wiping. Gentle hand washing and a protective coating help prevent new swirls.
Why is paint correction billed by the hour?
Every car's paint and condition is different, so the time needed varies. APC quotes correction on site after seeing the paint.
Can every scratch be removed?
No. Scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail are usually too deep to remove safely by polishing.
