How often should you wash your car in Seattle's rain?
Short answer
Rain isn't a wash. It leaves dirt and road film behind as it dries. Wash every two weeks if you can, and once a month at a minimum, by hand if possible or touchless if not.
Quick facts
| Ideal | Every two weeks |
|---|---|
| Minimum | Once a month |
| Best method | Hand wash, then touchless |
| Avoid | Brush and friction washes |
Doesn't all the rain keep my car clean?
It feels that way, but rain is closer to a dirty mop than a rinse. Seattle rain picks up dust and pollution on the way down, mixes with the road film already on the car, and then dries into spots and streaks. A car that has sat through a week of drizzle is usually dirtier than one that sat in the sun.
Why every two weeks?
Two weeks is about how long it takes for film, grit and fallout to build up into something that starts bonding to the paint. Washing on that rhythm removes it while it's still loose and easy. Waiting longer means more scrubbing, and more scrubbing means more risk of scratches.
If two weeks isn't realistic, once a month is the minimum that still keeps paint in good shape.
Does it matter how I wash it?
A lot. Frequent brush washes do more harm than good, because each one adds fine scratches. A careful hand wash is best, a touchless wash is next best. See hand wash vs tunnel car wash.
What if I don't have anywhere to wash?
That's common for apartment and condo living. Rinseless and waterless washes, done properly, are safe and need no hose. See no hose, no driveway.
At APC Auto Spa
APC recommends the same schedule for every vehicle: hand wash every two weeks if possible, monthly at a minimum, with touchless as the next best option and never brush or friction washes. The APC Hand Wash takes about 2 hours.
To make that schedule automatic, a Care membership has tiers from a couple of hand washes a year up to 11 a year, plus a yearly decontamination wash credit. Coated or film-protected cars use the Protected membership instead.
Frequently asked questions
- Is washing every week too much?
- Not if the wash is gentle. A careful hand wash or touchless wash every week will not hurt paint. Frequent brush washes are what cause damage.
- Should I wash my car less in winter?
- No. Winter road grime and constant wet are reasons to keep washing, every two weeks if possible and monthly at a minimum.
- Does a ceramic coating mean I can wash less?
- A coating makes washing easier and helps dirt release, but the car still needs regular washes to look and perform its best.
