Street parking: sap, bird droppings and city grime when your car lives outside

Short answer

A car parked outside collects tree sap, bird droppings, pollen and city grime. Bird droppings are acidic and can etch clear coat in sun and heat, so soften them with a soaked microfiber and lift them off. Never scrub them dry. For sap and pollen, hold a microfiber dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol on the spot, then wipe gently. Never use a scouring sponge on paint.

What does a street-parked car collect?

Street trees drip sap and drop pollen. Birds perch on wires and branches above the curb. Buses, construction and traffic add soot and dust. Add the drizzle and a car that lives on the street gets a little bit of everything, every day.

Which of these needs attention first?

Bird droppings. They're acidic, and on a warm or sunny day they can etch the clear coat, leaving a dull mark that stays after the dropping is gone. Sap is next, because it hardens over time and gets harder to remove. Pollen and grime are mostly a looks problem, though dried pollen can be stubborn.

What's the safe way to remove them?

The short version, using APC's method:

  • Bird droppings: soak a microfiber towel, lay it over the spot to soften it, then lift it away. Never scrub it dry.
  • Sap: dampen a microfiber towel with 70% isopropyl alcohol, hold it on the sap to soften it, then wipe gently. Hand sanitizer works in a pinch.
  • Dried-on pollen: the same alcohol and microfiber method.
  • Never use the rough, scouring side of a kitchen sponge. APC has seen it scratch paint beyond repair too many times.

Where can I find the full how-to?

Our sister site covers the full step-by-step, including timing and what to avoid: tree sap, bird droppings and pollen.

Can I protect a car that has to live outside?

A sealant or ceramic coating won't make the car immune, but it puts a barrier between the paint and whatever lands on it, and makes removal much easier. Washing every two weeks also keeps things from sitting long enough to do damage.

At APC Auto Spa

If spots have already been sitting, APC's Decontamination Wash (about 2.5 hours) removes bonded contamination with clay and finishes with a sealant. If droppings have etched the clear coat, a polish in an Exterior Detail (about 4 hours) can often reduce the marks. Deep etching may need paint correction, quoted on site.

Frequently asked questions

How fast do I need to remove bird droppings?
As soon as you reasonably can, especially on warm or sunny days. They are acidic and can etch clear coat, so softening and lifting them early prevents lasting marks.
Is isopropyl alcohol safe on car paint?
Used as described, yes. Dampen a microfiber towel with 70% isopropyl alcohol, hold it on sap or pollen to soften it, then wipe gently. Wash the area afterward if you can.
Can etching from bird droppings be fixed?
Light etching can often be polished out. Deeper etching may need paint correction, and in severe cases the mark cannot be fully removed.
